SEO Definitions

SEO is short form for search engine optimization and getting a search engine to like your site enough to rank it highly can be a challenge for some. Wading through the many words, phrases and definitions can also be a production, so here are just a few of the terms and what they mean as you start you ranking journey.

Search engines love relevant keywords (those words that direct people to your site) so it's no wonder that keyword density is a big thing too. All it means is how many times in your content a keyword is used. It is easy to calculate, all you have to do is count how many times a word is used and then divide by the number of words in the piece and then multiply by 100. What you are left with is a percentage. Too high and you may be penalized. Too low and you're not being as opportunistic as you can be.

Keyword stuffing is certainly not allowed and it will not only make your site look silly and irrelevant but it will penalize your ranking. It means putting a word or phrase into a text so much that it doesn't seem natural.

Latent Semantic Indexing or LSI is an important thing when it comes to rankings. The search engine will search your pages for keywords that support your main keyword and this is turn will boost those ever important rankings. They must be natural in language and commonly found together though, to be relevant. For example, if your main keyword was swimming pools, supporting keywords could be filter, pump, water, etc.

What is linkbait? No, it's not some sort of new fishing lure, instead it is highly viral content that will likely attract a lot of links. It seems easy enough but it's not easy to do. You'd have to either create something that brings a lot of value for free, something that is exceptional in every way and people just have to see it or something that is extremely funny. Good luck.

Link building is probably the biggest SEO term there is. All it means is you use it to get links back to your page. Well ranked pages have lots of backlinks to it.

In the world of SEO, it's all about the links, the keywords and the clarity and relevance of a site. If you nail all of this you have it made!
